Permissions & Transparency
To block apps and run automated schedules, Lockout needs a few Android system permissions. Here is a clear breakdown of what we use, why we need it, and what we never do.
1. Usage Access
PACKAGE_USAGE_STATSWhy we need it
To detect when you open a blocked app.
What we use it for
Lockout checks the name of the app currently on your screen. If it's on your blocklist during an active session, the block screen appears.
What we DO NOT use it for
We never record or upload your app usage history anywhere. We only check if the active app is on your blocklist.
2. Display Over Apps
SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOWWhy we need it
To show the full-screen block screen.
What we use it for
When you open a blocked app, Lockout displays the shield screen on top of it so you can return to focusing.
What we DO NOT use it for
We never display ads, and we never show hidden overlays to intercept your touches.
3. Foreground Service & Special Use
FOREGROUND_SERVICEWhy we need it
To keep blocking active while your timer runs.
What we use it for
Android closes background apps to free up memory. This service ensures your focus session isn't stopped in the middle of your work.
What we DO NOT use it for
This service only runs during an active session or routine—never when you aren't using Lockout.
4. Exact Alarms & Boot Completed
SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM / RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETEDWhy we need it
To start your scheduled routines on time.
What we use it for
Starts your focus routines at the exact time you scheduled, even if your phone was restarted.
What we DO NOT use it for
We never run background tasks or wake your device outside of the schedules you create.
5. Notifications
POST_NOTIFICATIONSWhy we need it
To give you a reminder before a session starts.
What we use it for
Sends a notification a few minutes before a scheduled routine begins, giving you time to wrap up what you're doing.
What we DO NOT use it for
We never send promotional alerts, marketing push notifications, or spam.
6. Query All Packages
QUERY_ALL_PACKAGESWhy we need it
To let you choose which apps to block.
What we use it for
Shows you a list of apps installed on your phone so you can add them to your blocklist.
What we DO NOT use it for
Your list of installed apps stays strictly on your device. We never upload or share it.
7. Ignore Battery Optimizations
REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONSWhy we need it
To stop your phone from pausing Lockout.
What we use it for
Certain phone brands (like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus) aggressively close apps in the background. This setting keeps your blocker running until your timer ends.
What we DO NOT use it for
Lockout is lightweight and won't drain your battery in the background.
